Great taste and convenient December 17, 2007 J. Seidman (Illinois, USA) 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
In the past, I just didn't use tomato paste very often. That's because most brands are just nasty. We'd always have a can of Hunt's or Contadina around, but I'd always be disappointed whenever I used them. It's really annoying to, say, make homemade enchilada sauce, have it taste mediocre, and then add insult to injury by having to throw away half a can of leftover tomato paste.
Amore, by contrast, actually keeps the bright tomato flavor. Since it's in tubes, there's none of the "tinny" taste so common to canned foods. And it's so easy to squeeze out a small amount that I use it all the time. There are all sorts of soups and sauces that can benefit from a little tomato flavor, but which don't justify opening a whole can of paste. (Not to mention the fact that most canned pastes would make the food taste worse, not better.)
There are only two mysteries about this product for me. First, a 1 1/2 tablespoon serving has 2 grams of fat. No other tomato pastes I looked at contain fat. Since the ingredients are only tomato paste and salt, I have to wonder where this fat comes from. The second mystery is that they label the box as "double concentrated." As far as I can tell, it's no more concentrated than any other tomato paste: I still have to use exactly the same amount in a recipe, it just tastes better than the other brands.
But I'll forgive Amore the mysterious fat and exaggerated labeling. This has become a cooking essential in my kitchen.
No "tinny," burnt taste September 20, 2006 B. LaPierre 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I bought this for its convenience and "thrift factor" -seldom do I use an entire can of tomato paste and usually end up throwing the remainder out. I was extremely pleased to find that it had a very fresh taste, without the slightly burnt and "tinny" taste of canned tomato paste. I would not pay the around $4.00 price for a single tube, but it is an extremely good for the price when bought in bulk in Amazon's grocery store. It's great having it shipped to my desk at work, also - saves time that I'd rather spend on cooking and gas because it's not available at local stores.
when a little is enough! January 10, 2007 J. Seiwert (Wichita, KS United States) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This stuff is great on the many, many times you only need a small amount of tomato paste, and don't want to waste the better part of a can. Plus, it is much better tasting than the domestic variety. A no brainer.
A cooking necessity January 11, 2007 J. Silva (MA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Tomato paste in a tube is the best cooking condiment ever -- it is so expensive here in the states, and in Italy it's about 50 cents a tube. But then there's the cost of going to Italy just for tomato paste in a tube. In bulk on Amazon, it's incredibly affordable, and I have a supply until I can accumulate enough miles to fly to italy again. Yum.
GOOD price on Amazon and recommended by Cook's Illustrated December 24, 2006 Dwight (USA) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
I bought this because I wanted to keep tomatos in stock, all our summer tomatoes are gone, lycopene and I am boycotting Heinz. 12 tubes of this takes up as much room as one jar of Prego tomato sauce.
And Dr. Gourmet says:
The USDA and FDA use a test known as the "Howard Mold Count" to determine the amount of mold in products that you purchase. There are regulations about the acceptable levels of mold in certain foods. The minute you open that can of tomato paste any mold that is in the can can grow with the exposure to oxygen. The longer it is in the fridge the more chance of mold growing. Most of the molds are benign and not likely to hurt you, but they will taint the flavor of the tomato paste.
